Outstanding Marist Student Receives Rotary Marikina 50th Student Leadership Award
The Rotary Club of Marikina conferred its 50th Student Leadership Award to Pio Lorenzo C.
Gavino, a grade 10 Marist student from Homeroom St. Peter Chanel, in a ceremony held last
March 2, 2019.
Commencing in 1969, the Student Leadership Award is an institutionalized project of the Rotary
Club of Marikina that aims to promote the importance of literacy and education by honoring
students who excel in both academics and extracurricular activities.
Contestants in the competition were rated based on two areas—scholastic records (50%) and oral
presentation (50%). For the scholastic records, the judges examined and assessed each
contestant’s academic credentials, extra-curricular activities, and leadership track record; for the
oral presentation, the judges posed a question to the contestant and assessed the latter’s
personality, public speaking skills, and presence of mind as he/she delivered an impromptu
Pio, the team captain of the Marist Debate Society and a champion debater, bested six other
contestants coming from varied private and public schools in Marikina City.
According to him, “Being Marist means that values such as Humility, Simplicity and Modesty
have a distinct place in my heart, and I inject this into my leadership style which prioritizes
others and emphasizes selflessness and stalwart integrity. My dedication to serve and willingness
means that, as I journey further into the future, I want to continually develop my leadership
abilities and help those I not only lead, but also serve.”
